Tuesday night in Toronto at the National Tennis Centre was one in which pages were being turned, new chapters written.
In the evening, it was Bianca Andreescu’s return to action in Toronto, the first time she has played in her hometown since she won here in her white-hot 2019 season as a teenager. That win came against one Serena Williams, who retired with an ailing back while trailing in the first set. A few weeks later, the Canadian would beat Williams again in the final of the U.S.
Kasatkina, who won last weekend in San Jose for her fifth WTA title, gave Andreescu all she could handle in the opening set at Sobeys Stadium. The 25-year-old Russian, playing under a neutral flag here due to the attack on Ukraine, won the first three points of her opening service game before Andreescu won five points in a row for a quick break. But neither player could hold serve through the first five games.
It was flashes of the old Bianca, mixing up a variety of shots and keeping her opponent off-balance with an aggressive game, while furiously winning just enough of the big points. But it was also flashes of the old Bianca, battling health issues and looking at times like she was labouring just to stay on the court. When her body has allowed, Andreescu has been one of the top players in the game, but those stretches have continued to be relatively rare.
