The AGO says Taqralik Partridge has been named to the newly created role, which will expand the gallery’s Department of Indigenous Art
The department was launched in 2017 in an effort to champion contemporary Indigenous artists, including First Nations, Inuit and Metis creators, from Canada and around the world.
Partridge previously worked with the AGO as a co-curator and contributor to the 2018 exhibition “Tunirrusiangit: Kenojuak Ashevak and Tim Pitsiulak.” She comes to the AGO from Galerie SAW Gallery in Ottawa, where she was director of Nordic Lab and co-lead of the Inuit Futures in Arts Leadership project.
Next year, AGO will present solo exhibitions by Inuit artists Bill Nasogaluak, Ningiukulu Teevee and David Ruben Piqtoukun.

There’s been a lot of changes over the decades, but the event proved to be a useful gathering of politics and the press. It’s a more sober event, in all senses of that word. There is a solemnity to the proceedings with the presentation of the Charles Lynch Award, which was shared this year by Ashley Burke of CBC and Mercedes Stephenson of Global News. There was the donation of $5,000 to the Fond québécois de journalisme international. The imbibing of libations was more discreet than in prior years. We didn’t see a repeat of that notorious incident when a guest pummelled a gallery member and broke the journo’s nose. That’s why I was distressed to read my colleague Stuart Benson’s piece in The Hill Times quoting people who want the historic Parliamentary Press Gallery dinner to disappear. Much of the criticism came over a joke Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told at Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s expense. “He said he’s a believer in using simple Anglo-Saxon words,” the PM jousted after Poilievre told Jordan Peterson that he was a believer in using simple Anglo-Saxon words. “I didn’t get it either, but I’m told it sounds much better in the original German.” Paul Park, all dressed up for the gallery dinner. The line was originally used by Texas columnist Molly Ivins to describe Pat Buchannan’s speech to the 1992 Republican convention. Trudeau’s jape has modern-day Mrs. Grundy clutching at their pearls. One critic of today’s Parliamentary Press Gallery Dinner held in the majestic Grand Hall at the Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., offered that inviting Parliamentarians should be a prerequisite not a suggestion. This is a noble sentiment, but not always practical. My MP date called me at 8:30 the morning of the dinner to announce he had COVID and could not attend.
