SAPS reported on Wednesday that they have apprehended six suspects linked to the tragic murder of Luke Fleurs, a Cape Town-born football star who plied his trade with the Joburg outfit, Kaizer Chiefs.
‘Police have arrested six suspects for the alleged hijacking and murder,’ SAPS spokesperson Mavela Masondo said.
Authorities have disclosed that Fleurs was awaiting service at a petrol station in his Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI when he was confronted by two individuals. The assailants reportedly brandished firearms and demanded Fleurs exit his vehicle.Police spokesperson Masondo stated that the arrests occurred early Wednesday in the southwestern Johannesburg township of Soweto, following the recovery of Fleurs’s car by detectives two days prior.
At the age of 24, Fleurs signed with Chiefs as a free agent in October after parting ways with his former club, SuperSport United, in September. Prior to his tenure with Chiefs, Fleurs made 70 appearances for SuperSport, having joined them from first-division side Ubuntu FC in 2018.Investigators suspect that the apprehended individuals are affiliated with a crime syndicate known for orchestrating other car hijackings across Gauteng province.
Masondo said, ‘The search for more suspects is continuing,’ and that the suspects are expected to appear at Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Friday 12 April.
