“I remember raking a bunker on Hole 8, and the top of the bunker was probably 12 feet,” Watkins said, sharing one of his favourite stories. “All of a sudden, out of the blue, you hear, ‘Jeez, that’s a deep bunker!’ Well, it was me and another greenskeeper, a Scotsman, and he just froze. He couldn’t say anything, because he looked up and it’s Tiger and Steve Williams. I said, ‘Well Tiger, I’m 5-nothing’ and then I put my arms straight up, ‘and I can’t even reach the top.
During that eight-stroke runaway in 2000, Woods completed four rounds without finding a single sand-trap, an incredible feat. As Kusiek explained, it’s a challenge for even the best in the world to steer clear of these hazards, especially when the wind starts to howl.
