Argos linebacker Wynton McManis' mother-in-law runs a catering business and brings armloads of food for the team. Her visits are occasions that have helped unite the team and strengthen McManis’s leadership.
linebacker Wynton McManis had himself quite a week, being named the Canadian Football League’s top performer for August, which prompted talk that he is arguably the team’s best and most consistent player through the first half of the season.
“She’s been doing it for five or six years, she can cook anything, you name it, she can cook it,” McManis says, proudly. “Whenever she is bringing , I try to get a menu and let the guys get in on it. You can get lobster, you can get jerk chicken, you can get ox tail, Chinese food, lo meins … I can see your mouth watering now.”
The Argos have an opportunity to solidify that position on Monday when they face Hamilton in the traditional Labour Day game at Tim Hortons Field. A win would put the Argos three wins ahead of the Ticats, with a home-and-away series against last-place Ottawa to follow. McManis says his success has been rooted in having a “chip on his shoulder,” an attitude that rose in him from the time he signed as a free agent with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 after being overlooked in the NFL draft.
