Could the industry’s shift to TikTok models further democratize the world of modeling? Models and editors weigh in ⤵️

, TikTok has become a tool for not just casting but a way to showcase aspects of their personality. “I see the app as just fun because [I] don't want to be a professional content creator,” says Miller. “I assume being viral on TikTok does help people get booked more but, for me, that’s still Instagram. Instagram is essentially a model's portfolio at this point and I also don't think my TikTok gives a very high-fashion energy.

Despite the playful nature of the app, being a TikTok model can have its downfalls. Miller has been subjected to transphobia on TikTok, which she says doesn't phase her, and Mitchell says there’s an underlying pressure to be on the app. “Because it’s taking up so much space in the world both on and offline, we’re seeing exactly what happened with Instagram a few years ago happen all over again,” Mitchell says.

While in the ‘90s you might have been cast at JFK airport with your family , in today’s increasingly digital world, you’re more likely to be cast through social media. Previously dominated by Instagram, this is rapidly shifting to TikTok, an app that’s changing the face of model castings because it’s changing the face of social media use itself.

There’s no doubt that bone structure will always be a priority in an aesthetic-driven industry. However, the industry’s shift to TikTok models is set to make it more democratic and personable because the app requires you to have your own personality and vision in order to stand out.
