“When I come into the shop in the morning, I am in my own little world,” he says. “It’s one in which I get to do what I love doing. And everything I bake, I sprinkle a lot of love into it.”back to life years after it had closed its doors for good in 1992.
Instead, he landed a job in the sanitation department at Hough Bakery in 1968 – cleaning the floors at 4 a.m., and eventually graduating to cleaning the baking equipment. “It was very difficult for people of color to get into certain positions, not just at Hough Bakery, but at that time it was everywhere,” Garner explained.
To save his job, and the jobs of his co-workers, Garner rallied other employees in the hope of buying the operation and reopening it as an employee-owned company. Archie Garner started out mopping floors and cleaning bakery equipment at the legendary Hough Bakery. After it closed, Garner fought for years to bring the beloved tastes back.
“Seeing my family support me this way is a huge boost. I know the business I scraped, and fought, for has a future because of that,” Garner said.
