Tuesday it is suing Israeli technology firm NSO Group for creating software it says surveilled and targeted Apple users, and has filed for a permanent injunction to ban the group from using Apple products.Terminal, January 29, 2019 in New York City. Apple is set to report first-quarter earnings results after U.S. markets close on Tuesday. Apple claimed NSO Group used its FORCEDENTRY software to break into Apple devices and install its spyware product, Pegasus.
The software allegedly allowed the group and its clients to access users’ microphones, cameras and other sensitive data. The tech giant said the attacks only affected a small number of users, with “journalists, activists, dissidents, academics, and government officials” specifically targeted. Apple said it will donate $10 million, along with any damages from the suit, to organizations pursuing cybersurveillance research and advocacy.
