Apple has been forced to temporarily halt its AI-powered news summaries feature due to the generation of inaccurate and false information. The feature, which was rolled out alongside summaries for supported entertainment apps, has been flagged for producing misleading headlines and reports, prompting concerns from international publications.

Apple is facing criticism for its AI-powered news summaries feature, which has been found to generate false stories. The feature, part of its on-device AI push, began rolling out to more territories outside of the US in December, alongside summaries for supported entertainment apps. However, Apple has decided to pause the feature due to serious inaccuracies in the generated content. Examples of the AI's mistakes include a false report on Luigi Mangione.

In December, the BBC reported on a headline created by the on-device AI, which falsely claimed that Mangione had shot himself after being arrested for the murder of healthcare insurance CEO Brian Thompson in New York.In response to these issues, Apple is taking steps to address the problems. These include disabling notifications for the summaries in developer previews for iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3. Apple also plans to display AI-powered summaries in italics to distinguish them from notifications originating directly from the app. Users will also have the option to disable summaries for specific apps within the Lock Screen of compatible iPhone and iPad devices. Additionally, users will receive a notification informing them that the summaries feature is in beta. This measure aims to better manage potential problematic notifications, similar to the Mangione incident. A public beta for iOS 18.3 is expected next week, but there's no word on when it will be fully released to users. As on-device AI becomes more prevalent, the focus is now on improving the performance of these features to match or exceed the capabilities of their human-designed counterparts
