The concert at Holocaust Museum Houston will feature music from Afghanistan, Russia and Turkey as well as include a panel discussion.

Joining Apollo on the piece will be Sakhi on rhubâb and Houston-area tabla player Shantilal Shah, who performed in Houston Grand Opera’s 2014 production “River of Light.” The title of Sakhi’s work, “Arman,” best translates as “desire” or “wish.” The composer “very meaningfully connected it to our program, in that it’s his wish for his people to be able to not only have peace to live, but have freedom of expression,” Detrick says.

“I think that dovetails also nicely into this kind of censorship of not only artistic expression but because of somebody's gender,” he says. “I thought it would be very apropos to include that in this program, to kind of look at that through another layer of censorship.” “Prokofiev was pretty much censored his entire career and encouraged to do things that he did not want to, and he kind of fought back through his music,” Detrick says.
