The AP reports that Democrat Dan McCaffery has won an open seat on Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court.
The Superior Court judge defeated Republican Carolyn Carluccio, a Montgomery County judge. Carluccio has conceded.The win is expected to have a major impact on issues affecting people across the commonwealth.In recent years, Pennsylvania’s top court has had the final say on issues ranging from COVID-19 restrictions to the state’s mail-in voting law.McCaffery’s victory widens the Democrat advantage on the court to 5-2.
The court is currently considering issues such as local municipalities being able to enact their own gun restrictions and whether public funding can be used for abortions.McCaffery had said if elected, he would look to balance how government regulations and laws impact personal rights, pointing to gun control, reproductive freedom, and public health mandates as areas where the court has been asked in recent years to weigh in.
