Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was shouted down by protesters Friday while speaking to New Yorkers about the flood of illegal immigrants overwhelming New York City.
"Close the border! Close the border! Close the border!" angry citizens shouted while Ocasio-Cortez and the NYC congressional delegation tried to speak about the crisis."Ultimately, I think there are three points of consensus here that are very important in getting a solution to this issue," the"Squad" member told the protesters.
"The first is that there is consensus here across geography and states on increasing federal resources to cities and municipalities dealing with this issue. The second is to allow for work authorizations so that the folks in here can get to work and start supporting themselves as soon as possible," she said.
"They're prevented from getting jobs, they're prevented from employment, and that is part of the strain on our public systems." The final point is extension of temporary protective status for Venezuelans, according to Ocasio-Cortez.The more the congresswoman spoke, the louder the crowd appeared to yell, and Ocasio-Cortez went quiet less than two minutes after she began speaking.
