Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Tuesday met with organizers of Stand Up to Violence, a first-of-its-kind program in New York that has shown a nearly 60% reduction in gunshot injuries.
Shootings year-to-date citywide have dipped by 21% compared to the same period in 2022, according to NYPD statistics. But the level remains higher than before the pandemic when crime was at record lows.Asked about the community’s concern about police violence, she replied, “Shifting our investments into community programs like these, I very strongly believe reduces incidents of police brutality.”
At the same time, for a program that is delivering data-driven results, the initiative is yet to be duplicated in other parts of the state. Under a Republican-controlled House, Ocasio-Cortez said future efforts to secure large federal grants for the Bronx program would be difficult. The key, she said, lies in getting matching funds from the city and state.
