'It is only the thoughts and feelings that arise in the viewer that give this work meaning," the British artist says about Time Horizon. At Houghton Hall, I start to understand what he meansStanding in the sweeping grounds of Norfolk’s Houghton Hall on a blustery day in early April, Antony Gormley is explaining something.
Walking around the exhibition at Houghton I am struck more than ever by just how significant the setting of an artwork can be to its reception. The contrast between these two similar works – both use Gormley’s self-modelled iron men – demonstrates exactly Gormley’s point: how the location, and therefore your experience, of a piece can change its meaning so fundamentally.has been shown before, at an archaeological site in southern Italy.
All of this slightly obtuse philosophy thrums in my head as I explore, mostly alone, but occasionally with my new friends, the other passengers of the coach, in front of whom I embarrass myself by thinking aloud that a Richard Long sculpture – retained by Houghton from the 2017 exhibition – is a pond. But I also have plenty of thoughts and feelings that have very little to do with the exhibition.
It’s interesting to consider how this contrasts with different art, too. The Rothko Room at the Tate Modern, for example, is small with dim lights so as to enhance the work in the way the artist intended. Gormley’s own, set on a hill near the motorway, has become part of, even definitive of, the landscape and the view from the road.
