Multiple suspects tried and failed to drill into a BART change machine in late December, then returned the next day and used a sledgehammer.
PITTSBURG — A 36-year-old man was arrested in late February after police identified him as one of two suspects who allegedly busted into a BART fare machine and made off with the money box, authorities said.
The 36-year-old Antioch man was arrested on suspicion of burglary and vandalism, and in connection with unrelated burglary charges, authorities said. He was identified from fingerprints and because he was later found driving the vehicle associated with the burglary, police said. The burglary occurred around 12:40 a.m. on Dec. 22, 2023, at the Pittsburg/Bay Point BART station. Police say a man and a woman showed up on Dec. 21, attempted to drill into the machine, but were unsuccessful. The following day they returned with a sledge hammer and were successful, police said.
