Councilman Mike Barbanica said ‘COVID is over,’ urging councilmembers to end teleconferencing options.

The Antioch City Council has ended teleconferencing opportunites for council members and residents.

City Attorney Thomas Smith explained that under AB 2449, the council could have two members log in remotely if they had approved reasons but not more than twice a year unless there was an unexpected emergency, which has no limits. “So the question before you is do you want that additional flexibility in terms of accommodations for both City Council and for all the commissions, committees and boards under AB 2449?” he asked. “Or do you want to have standard meetings without the teleconferencing option?”

“I think that this is a really great opportunity to continue this accommodation for folks when they’re unable to come in person whatever the reason may be,” he said.“I’m not for this,” he said. “I do not support this and I haven’t for some time. COVID is over. Council members should be here, in person.”
