Adverse health outcomes associated with long-term antidepressant use

Information on the dosing schedule was not available for extraction. The remaining eight antidepressants were categorised by drug class as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and ‘other’ antidepressants . Antidepressant treatment was defined as a time-varying exposure . Antidepressant use was assessed in three ways: any antidepressant treatment, SSRI antidepressant treatment or other antidepressant treatment.

These were age; gender; body mass index ; waist/hip ratio; smoking and alcohol intake status; physical activity; parental history of outcome; biochemical and haematological biomarkers ; socioeconomic status and self-reported long-term illness, disability or infirmity . All confounders were assessed at baseline. Analyses were restricted to participants with non-missing information on confounders.
