So, I did what I expected of myself. I took every AP class, maintained a 4.0, participated in extracurriculars and graduated as my high school’s valedictorian. Heck, I was even an Eagle Scout. I did everything I could think of to make my 18-year-old self the best college candidate I could be. Fortunately, I also had the foresight to apply to the University of Utah, and after being accepted into acreated by the Eccles family, my problems evaporated. By paying the cost of the hulking sum of my tuition, housing, meal plan and books, I was given the increasingly rare opportunity to invest my full attention into my higher education.
Many of these critical junctures that led to my graduating college debt-free were little more than a complicated game of chance. Whether or not my family supported my education at home. Whether I had to work in high school and college. Whether I lived in a state with generous donors interested in helping students avoid lifelong debt. All happy little accidents.
