Anthony Gismondi spotlights five international organic wines widely available in B.C. liquor stores
Earth Day has come and gone this week, but like many, I feel as if we need an Earth year to really get things moving in the right direction if we are ever to take on the challenge of climate change in a meaningful way. Following that thought, today we look at several changes in the wine business that are making the Earth a better place to live.
It’s no easy to task for owner/growers, and there will be doubters along the way, but we have already made significant progress. And our role as consumers is to seek out those who are improving the environment through substantial commitments to the land and support them by buying their products. That said, being organic isn’t enough, one still needs to make top quality wines.
On a broad basis, it’s my observation that wineries have significantly reduced their use of synthetic fertilizers and herbicides. Many have gone organic and biodynamic and have completely eliminated their use. Many are using “green manures” between the rows, leaving uprooted or sown crop matter to wither between the vines and serve as an organic mulch to become a home to the “good bugs,” retain moisture and be a vital soil amendment.
Every little bit helps the earth, which is why it’s essential to let wineries know you expect them to do their part moving forward.Weekend wine picksDomaine de L’Olivette Blanc Organic 2016, Roussillon, Languedoc, FranceThey are giving away this bright, shining organic blend of Viognier and Marsanne from the Languedoc. Chateau de Caraguilhes is a longtime proponent of organic viticulture in Languedoc.
