We dive deep with Malum co-writer director Anthony DiBlasi about reimagining his cult classic horror movie LastShift, expanding the original's lore, and more:
Anthony DiBlasi is joining the rare roster of directors remaking and reimagining their own movies with Malum. A reimagining of the cult classic horror movie Last Shift, the film centers on a rookie police officer tasked with supervising a closing station, where her late father used to work, only for the place's dark history to begin reverberating.
Anthony DiBlasi on Malum Screen Rant: You heard me gush about Malum the other day, and we talked about why you wanted to dive back into this world. Was there any part of you that almost wanted to hand the reins off as far as directing goes to someone else for reimagining this story and world? You know, Paymon's a real, I don't know about "real," but he is some something that exists, the King of Hell is a terminology that exists. We wrote that in 2013, and then when Hereditary came out, he did that too, it was Paymon, it was the King of Hell, it was a similar voyage to the end of the movie of, "You're actually this vessel for this King of Hell." So, going into [this], I was like, "Well, I'm not going to do that again.
This film does feel much larger than the first one, and you mentioned before how the original was done on a real shoestring budget. What were some of the things that you got to do on Malum that you weren't able to put together on the first film? Anthony DiBlasi: The one that needed to be there, I felt, was the cell sequence towards the end of the first act with the homeless guy. That was, to me in the first movie, a very strong sequence, not only because I literally shut off the lights for two and a half minutes, you literally don't see anything for like two and a half minutes.
