When they accidentally rip a hole into the quantum realm and the whole family gets hoovered in, they must explore this dangerous new universe, learn its rules, and try to escape the wrath of new villain, the formidable Kang the Conqueror , who has a long history with the family’s matriarch Janet . Janet has not been entirely clear with her family on the depth of her involvement in the quantum realm’s politics and warfare, thus emerging as a leader of sorts when she returns.
Kathryn Newton as Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Lang and Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania What follows in the next two hours is not without its pleasures. The quantum realm is a very weird place, and some of the best parts of the film involve the exploration and humour of discovering it: body horror-esque, gelatinous masses that respond to human touch, living buildings, a drinkable ooze that transcends language barriers.
The cast is doing their best: Majors has real gravitas and menace, and Rudd is lovable without even trying at this point. But even they can’t quite hold the seams together here. Michelle Pfeiffer makes a notable effort, though from where I’m sitting, seeing her boldly forge her way through the quantum realm is simply a reminder that she’s an actress I always want to see on my screen, in films better than this one. The end result is just another MCU mixed bag of ugly visuals and the odd chuckle.
