Pietermaritzburg High Court Judge Piet Koen has recused himself from Jacob Zuma's arms deal corruption case. ECRNewsWatch KZN
Koen announced on Monday morning that he's stepping aside from the trial involving the former president, saying it's what his conscience dictates.
Zuma's legal team's privately prosecuting state advocate Billy Downer in an attempt to have him removed from the case.He expressed concern that if he continues to preside over the matter, it would cast doubt on a fair trial for Zuma. "My findings have indicated that I have favoured a particular interpretation of these factual issues. A consequence of these findings might be that Mr Downer should continue has prosecutor and the prosecution of Mr Zuma.
“Mr Zuma would be reasonably justified to feel aggrieved. I have come to the conclusion, and it was not an easy decision, that I have to recuse myself from the trial. It is what the sound administration of justice, the requirements of the constitution and my conscious dictate,” he said.
