A 14th member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has died in hospital, prompting renewed calls for the government to recall the remaining soldiers. The death follows an extraordinary SADC summit in Harare to discuss the crisis in eastern DRC. Families of the fallen soldiers have expressed their grief and demanded the government prioritize their safety over international commitments. Meanwhile, EFF leader Julius Malema has criticized the government's deployment, arguing that South Africa lacks the capacity for sustained warfare and that the presence of SANDF troops is exposing the weakness of the military.

A 14th member of the South Africa n National Defence Force deployed in the DRC has died in hospital. This a day after Southern African leaders held SADC extraordinary summit in Harare, Zimbabwe yesterday to discuss the crisis in the eastern DRC .

Some families of the soldiers killed in the DRC have asked government to consider recalling the remaining soldiers from that country. The SANDF members in the DRC are part of SADeC and UN missions. It is not yet clear when their remains will be repatriated.“As we go through the news, we could see that we are losing people in South Africa and unfortunately as Moagi, we are not the government, but if we were the government we were to encourage the SA government to withdraw the troops from the DRC.

Addressing EFF party structures in Bela-Bela, Limpopo yesterday Malema said the country did not have the capacity to engage in warfare. “Bring our soldiers home because our army should not be a pawn in the game of capitalists which has now exposed the weakness of our military capacity. Bring them home because every day they pass away. We see a deliberate destruction of our arms manufacturer, Denel and we see the consequence of the year-on-year budget cuts to the defense department. Mr President, bring our soldiers home and desist from meddling in the affairs of DRC and Rwanda,” says Malema.
