Drafted by the Twins in 2015, Cabbage made his major-league debut as a pinch-hitter Friday and will be in the lineup Sunday in a nationally televised game
ANAHEIM — Trey Cabbage’s road to the major leagues was a long one.
Cabbage, 26, spent seven years in the Twins’ system, including the 2020 season, which was washed out because of COVID-19. Cabbage was not invited to the Twins’ alternate site, so he worked out in his parents’ basement and took batting practice with his dad that year.“That makes you realize that I didn’t want to do anything else,” Cabbage said.
He’s naturally an outfielder, but the Angels have been giving Cabbage time at first base. He said he’s as comfortable at first as in the outfield, although the word around the organization was that first is still a work in progress. Ohtani has had issues with his fingernail and a blister in recent starts. Ohtani said it was the fingernail thatSecond baseman Brandon Drury, who is on the injured list because of shoulder inflammation, has been hitting off a tee and doing defensive work. Drury had a cortisone shot just before the All-Star break, and he said it finally started to feel better a few days ago.
“Hitting off a tee, I feel like I’m going to be OK,” O’Hoppe said. “It didn’t feel any different than before. It actually feels stronger. I’m happy with where we’re at.”
