The rookie infielder had a .500 on-base percentage after his first seven major league games, making him a more prototypical leadoff hitter in front of the dangerous middle of the Angels’ lineup.
ANAHEIM ― The last time he sat in a Triple-A clubhouse, Michael Stefanic was reaching base at a higher rate than all but two qualified hitters in the Pacific Coast League. One of them, teammate David MacKinnon, beat him to the major leagues by a couple of weeks.
On Tuesday, Stefanic was rewarded with a spot at the top of the Angels’ lineup for the first time all season. Ward has been the Angels’ primary leadoff hitter this season, batting first in 45 games. Ohtani , Brandon Marsh , Jonathan Villar , Matt Duffy , Luis Rengifo and Juan Lagares are next. Stefanic isn’t much of a stolen base threat. But in terms of getting on base for the dangerous middle of the Angels’ lineup, he is a more prototypical leadoff hitter than any of his predecessors.
