The Angels equaled a major league record by striking out 20 times in a 4-2 loss to the Houston Astros on Sunday afternoon, giving them 48 strikeouts in three-game sweep.The Angels had a chance to avoid a nine-inning strikeout record by sending the game to extra innings, but Ryan Tepera gave up a two-run homer to Jeremy Peña, his second of the game, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
“We’re very well aware ,” Reed said. “We’re talking to guys about what each individual needs to do to be the best version of themselves. And right now, it’s not going our way.” Trout is not alone, though. The Angels have been struggling at the plate for more than a month, and they have been striking out all season. They lead the majors with 783 strikeouts at the exact midpoint of the season. They are on pace to shatter the franchise record for strikeouts of 1,394, set last season.
The Angels scored first on Rengifo’s homer in the second inning. In the third, they parlayed three walks and a Shohei Ohtani single into a run, but they had the bases loaded and one out and couldn’t score any more runs, because Rengifo and Michael Stefanic both struck out. “We were just caught off guard a little bit,” Haselman said. “They made a nice play, a heads up play. They were watching the game.”
