The 33-year-old baby killer carried on attacking infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital - despite staff voicing concerns
Twice hospital consultants raised concerns about Lucy Letby - but her trial heard they were urged ‘not to make a fuss’.
After her fourth attack,on Baby D in June 2015, Dr Stephen Brearey, head of the neonatal unit, reviewed the circumstances surrounding the case, and the ‘association’ of Letby to a number of collapses was identified, Letby’s trial was told.Hospital consultants twice raised their concerns about Letby with management, in October 2015 and again in February 2016, the jury was told at Manchester Crown Court.
He alleged it took managers three months to respond to a request from consultants to meet them after the second time they raised concerns, in February 2016. “Eventually, we reached a point in June 2016 when we said, ‘Something has got to change’, but that’s not for me to talk about now.” One of the ‘gang of four’ consultants Letby dismissed for wanting to blame her for failings at the hospital, Dr John Gibbs, told the trial a ‘tipping point’ was only reached in June 2016 when two brothers from a set of triplets died on successive days, Baby O and Baby P. Letby was convicted of their murders. These were her final crimes.
The detective in charge of the investigation, Det Supt Paul Hughes of Cheshire Police, said Letby was among a number of staff who were moved when she was removed from night shifts.
