The approximately 17,000 participants began gathering well before sunrise to stretch, warm up and have a snack. The runners came from all over, not just the Long Beach area. Julio Juarez, 33, for example, traveled from Zacatecas, Mexico, to race in his sixth marathon — but first in Long Beach.“When you run the marathon,” said Legacy Runner Ken Williams, 61, “you want to make sure you run with your friends.

Thousands of spectators, meanwhile, have lined the marathon route. That route sends runners toward the Queen Mary, and through Shoreline Village and then Belmont Shore via Ocean Boulevard. The marathon route then follows the 5K loop around the Cal State Long Beach campus and then back toward Ocean Boulevard for a sprint to the finish.

The weekend’s activities kicked off in earnest Saturday morning, with the Aquarium of the Pacific 5K race. Organizers estimated a crowd of between 12,000 to 15,000 gathered near the starting line, including thousands of runners, shattering previous 5K run records.
