The women's league's former president, Bathabile Dlamini, alongside Sisisi Tolashe, and Thembeka Mchunu are vying for the presidential position as the league kicks off its elective conference this weekend.
JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress Women’s League will on Friday announce the shortlist of candidates who have been nominated for leadership positions.Several leaders from the ANC national executive committee have been roped in to assist the women organise their conference. Its former president, Bathabile Dlamini, is again in the running for re-election.
Day one of the ANCWL conference, much like the recent gathering of the governing party’s youth wing, is likely to be a slow one for delegates. But the Women’s League has vowed to be more efficient in running their conference than other party structures. Details on the number of delegates expected, its programme for the weekend, and names of those who have made it onto the ballot through branch nominations are all expected on Friday.
Fierce lobbying continues on the sidelines, with some supporters of Sisisi Tolashe’s presidential ambitions now throwing a spanner in the works by backing KwaZulu-Natal’s Thembeka Mchunu. This split is being exploited by those who are backing Dlamini’s bid for re-election.The ANCWL conference is expected to wrap up on Sunday.
