A Central Middle School student was arrested after bringing an unloaded handgun and ammunition to school on Monday, Anchorage police said.
The student showed the weapon to others at the South Addition neighborhood school on Monday morning, police said, and at least one student reported the gun to staff.
A staff member contacted the student and the gun was found inside the their backpack along with ammunition, police said. The weapon was confiscated and school resource officers were notified around 11 a.m. and responded to investigate. Charges were forwarded to the Division of Juvenile Justice, according to police.
A student notified school administrators that another student “was in possession of a weapon on campus,” Central Middle principal Chris Bernoski said in a message to families Monday. The school notified police and located the student, who was taken into custody by police, Bernoski wrote.
