The African National Congress (ANC) maintains its dominance in local elections, winning back Ward 2 in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg, and securing another victory in the Northern Cape.
ANC continues its winning streak in by-elections after securing Ward 2 in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). This ward was previously held by the IFP during the February 2023 by-elections. The ANC triumphed over the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party and the IFP in the by-election held on Wednesday. Mbongweni Zuma will assume the role of councillor for the Sweetwaters district after the ANC secured 1,602 votes, defeating the MKP who received 1,164 votes.
The IFP trailed behind with 344 votes, while the EFF chose not to participate. The ANC garnered 51.36% of the vote. The by-election was triggered by the IFP's decision to remove Councillor Sibusiso Ntuli, who faced accusations of misconduct and unruly behavior. Internal divisions within the MKP led to disagreements over their candidate, with factions vying for either Nkosinathi Mshengu or Sthabile Nkabinde. The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) formally announced the results of Wednesday's by-elections, which saw the ANC win two seats in KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape. The party expressed gratitude to the voters and pledged to uphold their trust by delivering on campaign promises. It also commended the volunteers for their efforts. The ANC called on elected representatives to serve with integrity. In another victory, the ANC regained control of the Hantam Municipality in Calvinia, Northern Cape, marking their third municipality recaptured in by-elections over the past three months. According to ANC chairperson in the Northern Cape, Zamani Saul, this victory signifies the party's growing momentum
