ANC takes early lead nationally but trailing uMkhonto weSizwe Party in KwaZulu-Natal
ANC polling agents set up a tent decorated with party paraphernalia outside a polling station in Umlazi on 29 MayDespite a few voter management devices glitches that forced some voting stations to continue with the voting process throughout the night, the Electoral Commission of SA wasted no time and started with the counting of the votes in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The officials of the electoral commission were forced to work beyond the scheduled closing time of 9pm due to long lines of voters who wanted to cast their votes. While some stations were still trying to complete their processes, others were starting with the counting of the votes. The first national results, as displayed on the leaderboard at the results operations centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, showed that the ANC was in the lead with 414 292 votes, followed by the DA with 247 280.The EFF was third on the board with 80 000 votes, while the new kid on the block, the uMkhonto we Sizwe Party, was fourth with 75 758.However, the battle for KwaZulu-Natal showed that the MKP was quicker off the block with more than 56 000 votes than the ANC with 27 000 votes.
The IFP was third with 23 000 votes. The leaderboard showed that only 7% of the votes were counted in the province. According to political analysts, the voting pattern seems to have changed with the formation of the MKP in many provinces, including Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, where the ANC was in control of the proceedings in 2019.IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo said despite a few glitches, the commission was expecting a larger voter turnout as compared to the 2019 elections.
