ANC set to take on retailers for price gouging and ‘racist practices’

r. Lesufi also wants the retail industry to own up to the rising food prices that have hit ordinary citizens hard on the pocket.

Gauteng premier Lesufi, who was speaking in his capacity as the ANC chairperson in the province, said the recent developments where Makro admitted in court that it had been paying staff different salaries based on their race could not be left unchallenged. “This is a matter that cannot be left unattended, and we have also added Makro in our campaign that will take place within the retail industry on issues related to race. We have also taken a decision as the PEC that we will ask the staff members to appeal the court’s decision because it agreed with Makro.”

Lesufi also spoke out against the retail industry for manipulating food prices at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. He was reacting to a report released by the Competition Commission last month, which raised concerns about retail shops increasing prices of basic needs without justification.

He said the Gauteng PEC had taken a decision to run a campaign to compel retailers to reduce their prices.
