ANC KZN calls for ceasefire, pledges support for Ramaphosa
The province has been the strongest base for Ramaphosa’s challenger for the party presidency, Zweli Mkhize, and has been vocal about its opposition to the incumbent. Outspoken provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo, who led the biggest block of those who mobilised against Ramaphosa’s bid for a second term, said the structure accepted that his election was democratic and that it would now fully rally behind him. We campaigned, but he won and we must accept that he is a president until 2027.
While KwaZulu-Natal was the biggest ANC province in terms of membership and considered the most influential, none of the candidates from the province made it as officials, a fate the province also suffered in 2017. "They have no choice. It is a matter of being disciplined and understanding democratic centralism," he mentioned. "Now, we have a president. We have the top seven and that is it. We go forward. We are going to be united. We will surprise you. We will go to [the] 2024 [elections] united and we will defeat the opposition.
"The outcome is what the delegates have expressed. It means we can move forward and rebuild the organisation. Renewal has got a new impetus now." he said.
