The incident sparked controversy after reports surfaced that Mbalula opted for the lavish vessel during a visit to commemorate party members and political prisoners incarcerated there during apartheid.
While other party leaders reportedly used the Robben Island Museum ferry, Sikhululekile, and President Cyril Ramaphosa was flown to the island for security reasons, Mbalula's transportation choice drew criticism.ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri emphasized that the decision was driven by Mbalula's packed schedule, which included a regional cake-cutting ceremony and multiple engagements. She argued that the yacht ensured efficient execution and timely completion of all obligations. Bhengu-Motsiri further clarified that there was no unethical conduct or personal benefit derived from the arrangement. She emphasized that the businessman who provided the yacht is a reputable entrepreneur whose relationship with the ANC is limited to being a stakeholder.ANC officials acknowledged that Mbalula's transport was arranged by the party, not personally by him. They defended the decision as necessary given his busy schedule and the need to avoid delays. ANC chairperson Gwede Mantashe stated that the decision was not made by the National Executive Committee (NEC) but could have been an operational decision within the party.
