The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo has faced criticism for charging R1 million for a seat at a platinum table at their 113th anniversary gala dinner, sparking outrage among residents and opposition parties.
The African National Congress ( ANC )'s gala dinner in Limpopo province has sparked outrage due to its exorbitant price tag . A single seat at the platinum table, reserved for those eager to dine alongside Premier Dr. Phophi Ramathuba, ANC Limpopo treasurer Nakedi Kekana-Sibanda, and party treasurer-general Dr. Gwen Ramokgopa, costs a staggering R1 million. Other tables offer varying price points, with gold chairs costing R750,000, bronze chairs R500,000, and ordinary chairs R10,000.
The ANC claims the gala dinner will be an inspiring event, providing attendees with an opportunity to engage in discussions about the party's vision for the future. However, critics have condemned the pricing, arguing that it is out of touch with the realities of Limpopo's impoverished communities. Phillip Machubeni, a resident of Morutji village, questioned the ANC's expectation of such a high financial commitment from citizens, many of whom are unemployed due to factory closures and economic hardship. He pointed out that Limpopo, one of the two poorest provinces in South Africa, struggles with high unemployment rates.Seun Mogotji, the general secretary of the Bolsheviks Party of South Africa, also expressed disapproval, stating that the expensive gala dinner reflects the ANC's dwindling financial health and its reliance on fundraising events rather than addressing the root causes of poverty. Siviko Mabunda, the Limpopo secretary of the Forum for the Limpopo Entrepreneurs (Fole), accused the ANC-led government of awarding lucrative tenders exclusively to party members, further exacerbating the economic disparities within the province. He alleged that the money raised from the gala dinner would be used to finance the ANC's provincial elective conference, benefiting party officials at the expense of small businesses struggling to survive
