The regional executive committee of the ANC in Ekurhuleni has reprimanded its chairperson and mayor Mzwandile Masina for openly supporting EFF leader Julius Malema’s statement calling for the collapse of the “white economy”
In a statement, ANC Ekurhuleni regional spokesperson, Sonnyboy Masingi said the committee emphasized to Masina “the importance of ANC leaders and members raising ANC policy positions and views without attachments to perspectives, characters and content that borders on transgressing what the ANC stands for”.
Masina was criticised by the ANC on Monday. In a statement, ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe said Masina’s statement on nationalisation of the economy fell outside the confines of the party’s policy position. The Ekurhuleni executive committee expressed similar sentiments saying “any perspective or idea that supports the collapse of the economy is not a policy position of the ANC”.
Amid the controversial tweets and the committee’s urgent meeting, Masina dared the ANC to fire him. He sent a WhatsApp text to the committee group stating that he would be resigning.“I’m sorry comrades am ready to step down in every responsibility I’ve been given. I can’t lead an organisation of cowards. Can’t be part of this,” read his text.
