ANC and DA reach deal to form South African government of national unity

The African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance will put aside their decades-long rivalry to work together.

South Africa's main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance , says it has agreed a deal with the governing African National Congress to form a government of national unity.

Despite the bitter history, DA leader John Steenhuisen said the deal was a "new chapter in our history". Mr Steenhuisen said: "Through the votes the country has made it clear that they do not want one party to dominate our society."
