What U.S. midterm results mean for Joe Biden, Donald Trump — and America
U.S. President Joe Biden proclaimed that America was veering off in dangerous directions in the lead-up to Tuesday’s midterm elections.With an energized Republican party looking set to win a majority in the House of Representatives on Tuesday night and threatening to control the Senate as well, America could be headed into a period of legislative deadlock, political strife and potential chaos.
And if the #ImpeachBiden hashtag didn’t already exist on Twitter, someone would soon be inventing it. There could be a slate of Republican senators, representatives and governors eager to take up that task in the service of their party or out of a sense of allegiance to Trump himself. If such a fate transpires — and in a particularly tight race, it could be days before final results are tallied — two paths lie ahead for Biden, who is halfway through his first term as president.
In contrast, Biden’s America is being stung by the global inflation phenomenon and by post-pandemic economic difficulties. At 79, he has little of the pep and pizzazz that would have allowed Clinton to weather the political difficulties.
