Leafs win Game 3 fight to the finish over Lightning in overtime
Morgan Rielly scored with 44 seconds left in overtime as the Leafs won a game they probably deserved to lose, beating Tampa Bay 4-3 on Saturday night.
It was the result of a tough shift for Tampa forward Brayden Point, who was checked by Rielly and fell awkwardly into the boards. It looked like his head twisted awkwardly as he fell to the ice, but he emerged holding his stomach as if that was more the issue and briefly left the game. Matthews was probably the most effective Leafs forward the entire game. But his teammates dragged their feet for large parts of a lethargic second period when Darren Raddysh broke a 2-2 tie. Then, with the Ilya Samsonov pulled late in the third, the Leafs pulled off some nifty passing. Mitch Marner got the puck to O’Reilly in the slot and he banged the puck in to force overtime. The Lightning got a roster boost with Victor Hedman back in the lineup.
That meant Ilya Samsonov had to be at his best, and he was the best Leaf through a terrible second period for Toronto. They were their own worst enemies, turning easy zone exits into misadventures through poor decision-making and general discombobulation.
