Leafs open road trip with most lopsided defeat of the season vs. Islanders
7-2 loss to the New York IslandersLine juggling didn’t work. A traditional 12-forward, six-defence formation didn’t work. Pulling the goalie with more than six minutes to go certainly didn’t work. And Ilya Samsonov couldn’t save the day behind his mistake-prone teammates over the final two periods as the playoff-desperate Islanders handed the Leafs their most lopsided defeat of the season.
They are 5-4-1 in March, their worst month since that troubling 4-4-2 October, and have allowed at least four goals in four of their last seven games. They certainly don’t look like the best version of themselves.Keefe had been unusually honest about why forward lines have changed, and why the top scorers were separated. For John Tavares, it was because he was slumping offensively. Keefe hoped putting Marner back on his wing could be an elixir of sorts.
And while William Nylander has produced somewhat — eight points in his last eight games, four at even strength — the coach had seen a tailing off in his play and willingness to engage in puck battles.
