Mike Wilner: Kevin Gausman’s nightmare first inning buries Jays in Houston series opener

It was like they knew what was coming.

The right-hander, who came into the game having allowed a grand total of three earned runs over his first three starts of the season, gave up a hard-hit single to Mauricio Dubón on his very first pitch. Gausman’s next offering was hit even harder by Alex Bregman, but chased down in deep centre by Kevin Kiermaier. After an uncharacteristic walk to Yordan Álvarez, who laid off three Gausman splitters, José Abreu crushed one over Kiermaier’s head and off the wall for a two-run double.

An especially odd thing about the inning was that Astros hitters were able to lay off Gausman’s splitter, a pitch that looks so much like his fastball that it usually leaves hitters flailing away at nothing. Now, it’s extremely unlikely that the Astros are up to their old tricks. After all, you can’t steal a catcher’s signs with a camera now that PitchCom exists. It’s also very difficult to imagine that their manager, Dusty Baker, would allow anything like that to happen.
