Despite the second triple-double of Fred VanVleet’s career, Toronto struggles to contain Utah’s big men in 131-128 loss.
SALT LAKE CITY—The Raptors attempted 27 more field goals than the Utah Jazz, forced 16 turnovers while committing only seven and set a season high with 25 offensive rebounds.Unable to handle a pair of Jazz seven-footers and incapable of holding their own when the game was played at any normal tempo,
“In the guts of the game there when we were making them miss quite often, I think we had a stretch of seven consecutive stops, and then the two or three would-have-been stops if we had limited them to one shot,” coach Nick Nurse said. “It was just keeping them off the glass for just a little stretch. For the most part, it wasn’t bad initially, defensively.”
“I just don’t think we’re quite as nasty on the defensive end as we were a year ago night after night,” he said. “I just don’t feel as dominating a presence when we go out there, that we’re going to take you out of stuff and you’re going to have to really work. “We need to be a lot more physical,” VanVleet said Wednesday morning. “That’s one area we can improve on, just with a change of mindset. “Whether it’s your preparation or your activation or whatever, it’s getting your body ready to fight a little bit better.”
“It’s just staying on top of that and just keeping your body ready. Whether it’s better synergy with the things we’re doing or better preparation, that’s an area we can get better at.” “One of the comments the coaches made this morning is there are 12, 13 guys who all can go out there and you’ve got to prepare for,” Nurse said before the game. “They’re pretty talented, for sure.”
