Is Curtis Joseph a Hockey Hall of Famer? Henrik Lundqvist’s impending induction helps former Leafs star’s case
The second goalie is long-time New York Ranger Henrik Lundqvist. He hasn’t been eligible for a HHOF nomination — until this year. He’s deemed a shoo-in as a first-time ballot entry when voters convene Wednesday to make their decision., a self-proclaimed numbers guy who has created a database to compare every Hockey Hall of Famer. “He’s the only first-ballot guy that deserves that opportunity.
“But Cujo rates extremely well. Lundqvist has a fairly better case, but you can compare them closely and that to me means Cujo has long been overlooked.” Pidutti is a Sudbury-based accountant who used the spare time during the pandemic’s lockdown to download and analyze the careers of every Hall of Famer to determine the data that makes them worthy of the honour. To him, a handful of players — including Joseph and another ex-Leaf, Alex Mogilny — have what it takes to qualify but have been overlooked.
The knocks on Joseph are that he was never the best goalie of his era, never made it to the Stanley Cup final and was a backup goalie in that 2002 gold-medal game. The goalies of his era — Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy, Dominik Hasek and Ed Belfour — were the ones taking home the Vezina Trophy. They’re in the Hall. Joseph’s 63 playoff victories are the most by a goaltender without winning a Stanley Cup.
“I don’t think it’s a legitimate reason,” said Pidutti. “I think it’s a function of poor timing. When you look at those four goalies, that’s a really tough crowd. If he plays five years earlier, or five years later, it’s a different conversation. I think he’s a victim of bad timing.”
