Mike Wilner: Another early shower for Alek Manoah in Jays’ loss to Brewers
had another short start for the Jays, lasting only four innings and taking the loss. The six-foot-six right-hander walked three — each one to lead off an inning — but allowed just two runs, both on a home run by Longueuil, Que.’s Abraham Toro.
Manoah needed 89 pitches to get through the outing, which he finished by getting out of a jam with runners on first and second and none out in the fourth. It was the seventh time this season that the 2022 Cy Young finalist failed to complete five innings, and the fourth in his last five starts. “It’s been tough,” an emotional Manoah said after the game, before taking a deep breath. “Not doing what I’m meant to be doing. Just gotta keep fighting, keep finding positives and building off them.”Milwaukee’s Christian Yelich led off the fifth inning with a 95.4-m.p.h. ground ball that was scooped up bywide of first base. Guerrero went into his glove to get the ball and flip it to reliever Trevor Richards, who was on his way to cover first base, but came away with nothing.
Thinking quickly, Guerrero took off his glove and threw it with the ball still stuck inside. The pitcher hauled in the whole thing and stepped on first for the out. Last year, Guerrero had a couple of throws go right through his glove — one from Santiago Espinal and another by Gabriel Moreno — but he’d never had one get stuck before.
