Spoiler alert: It’s wasteful.

, Sephora, or any of your favorite beauty retailers and realize that half the products you purchased won't work for your skin type. Thankfully, the store has a solid return policy; but what happens after you bring the products back? Well, anBianca Ann Levinson, who posts under @biancaann5 on TikTok, went viral this week after revealing exactly how ULTA handles returns. While the store is happy to honor its return policy, the company doesn't resell items that have been brought back.

In the video, Bianca shows how pristine makeup palettes that have been returned are scraped into the trash; liquids and moisturizers are squirted away; and coveted Kylie Lip Kits are destroyed. "This is what we have to do so that people don't dumpster dive and steal it," Bianca says in the video. At first glance, this process might seem extremely wasteful because, well, it is. But, of course, it would not be sanitary to resell the returned products. As Bianca points out in another TikTok, it's nearly impossible to tell if a product has been slightly used or touched, and the risk of cross-contamination is latent. Especially in the age of the coronavirus, there's no reason to chance it.

But it was precisely the wasteful aspect that Bianca wanted to highlight with her original post, not from the company’s perspective but the consumer’s. In an interview withBianca explained her video further by saying, "I wanted people to realize that when they return things, it’s not always put back on the shelf. They should reconsider before returning items they purchased.

With over three million views on the OG video, it's clear that she's been successful in getting the message out there. So next time you feel the sudden urge to buy makeup, remember this now infamous TikTok."The health and safety of our guests is a top priority and we want to ensure an exceptional shopping experience for all. As part of that, we take protecting the integrity of the products we sell very seriously.
