Users of Google's cellphone service were unable to place or receive phone calls today, less than a day after a massive Cloud outage knocked out services like YouTube, Gmail and Snapchat by jillianiles
which made services like Gmail, Docs and YouTube unavailable for more than three hours on Sunday.
Sunday’s downtime, which Google blamed on a “network congestion issue in eastern USA,” also knocked out services that rely on Google’s Cloud including Snapchat, Shopify, Discord, iMessage, as well as. Some people also reported problems using Google’s smarthome products like Nest cameras and thermostats.
The back-to-back product failures highlight the potential dangers of having so many products rely on one company’s infrastructure. Sure, being forced to abandon YouTube for a few hours may not lead to anything more serious than a little frustration and wasted ad budgets, but not being able to control a home’s air conditioning or receive phone calls could have more severe consequences.
"Thank you for your patience and sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused," the company posted in As for Sunday’s failures, Google said it would provide a more detailed report after an internal investigation.
