We asked 27 political insiders, experts, activists and seasoned observers what really changed in the Democratic race in its first big night
What did we really just see on that Miami stage? The sometimes hectic first national debate Wednesday night marked not just a crucial moment for the 2020 presidential campaign, but its first pivot, as two dozen candidacies began to get pulled together into a single, larger story.
Warren is a newcomer to the Medicare for All issue, cosponsoring it for the first time in 2017 in anticipation of her presidential campaign. But her full-throated defense of the proposal is likely to boost the credibility of it in the minds of many prominent validators who relate to her wonky branding more than they relate to Sanders’s anti-establishment orientation.
What seemed to change was a hint of much more visibly moderate, even center-right conversation. Candidates were reaching for the general election. Save for quick mentions and shout-outs, there was a strangely comfortable pivot away from the dominant black voter discourse and protestations that have dictated much of the debate in this cycle.
So far this campaign, we’ve had more than half a dozen candidates who launched bids with all the qualifications you’d want and national name recognition, and they have basically done...fine. Any of them could break out, and last night it was Castro. He has pushed decriminalization of migration into the mainstream, and he hit the right notes and sparred effectively. Booker also had a strong performance and has been making strong moves toward more progressive policies.
