In the new movie 'Blackberry,' NHL commissioner Gary Bettman isn’t just a character in the film. He's on the receiving end of one of the great cinematic meltdowns in recent history, writes seangentille.

and then-Phoenix Coyotes out of bankruptcy court, the latter a more transparent attempt at a hostile franchise takeover. That all actually happened.

I’m like, “Gary Bettman? Why are you doing a thing where anyone has to play Gary Bettman? What are you doing? Some kind of weird hockey story?’” And he was like, “Naaah, it’s about BlackBerry.” I, of course, remembered that hustle. And I was like, “I don’t know, I guess.” I talked to Matt briefly on the phone. They were trying to figure out who could do this thing. It was all very quick and it was all very funny because it was all hush-hush at the time.

So you just get a little sense of him, you know. It’s not a thing where people would be like, “That’s not Gary Bettman!” Some people won’t know who Gary Bettman is. Other people will be like, “Oh, no way. Critch stunk at that.” It’s either they know exactly or they’ve never heard of the guy, and it’s right down the middle. It’s not like doing Trump or somebody, where you can go and do classic bits using a catchphrase. Just that “I’m right and you’re not” thing he’s got going on.Very much so.

So I’m sitting there like, “Oh man, I wish I had popcorn.” He didn’t really chuckle at that part. I think he was smiling. So that was awkward. One of the thru lines is the pronunciation of name. He corrects people who say “Ball-SILLY’ instead of ‘BALLS-lee.” And then you say as Bettman, “Can we see that Mr. Ball-SILLY gets safely back to Canada?’ It’s a “It’s one last little dig. And especially because everything leading up to this would have been so professional and respectful. “Oh, good for you. Good man. You’re amazing.” Nothing hurts more than finding out what people actually think of you.
