There was Elvis, Highland dancers, Cookie Monster, and a couple who registered on a whim minutes before the deadline.
A tall man in a Cookie Monster costume stood out as a sea of humanity burst through the starting gates of the TC 10K race on Sunday morning.
It was Rush’s fourth time doing the TC 10K and he said he ran a decent time, though the Elvis bell-bottomed jumpsuit and wig — complete with sideburns — got a little toasty near the end. “But hey, it’s about having some fun, right?” David Branson of Seattle and River Tse-Browell, 14, of Shirley were an uncle-nephew tandem, reunited by the race they enjoyed prior to the pandemic. Coming together again to run and reconnecting was “a joy,” said Branson. “It’s such a great race and we really enjoyed ourselves out there today,” said Branson. “You get out there by the water and see those Olympic Mountains … wow. And the people are great out there.
For Diane Fraser, who turns 79 in a week, it’s about keeping fit. She completed an eight-mile race in Hawaii in February and has a 10K in Oak Bay next month.Heather Burke, 58, and Neil Gaudreault, 57, of Mission were the last registrants for the TC 10K, signing up minutes before registration closed on Saturday night.
